Cardinal Mooney students had another successful year showcasing their musical talents. The following is a recap of all of their achievements. Congratulations to all of these students. Go Cards!

The Stambaugh Youth Concert Band is an auditioned group of high school students that meets in Stambaugh Auditorium and is conducted by Youngstown State University’s Associate Director of Bands, Dr. Brandt Payne. The group meets once a week throughout the school year and performs two concerts per year. This year one student from Mooney auditioned and was selected to perform in the group. Congratulations to freshman saxophonist Giana Vigliotti.

The Ohio Music Educator’s Association District 5 Honors Choir is a group that meets annually on the campus of YSU.  Students from Mahoning, Trumbull, and Ashtabula counties are selected by their teachers to sing in a mass choir.  The Mooney participants this year were sophomore Michael Sheehan, juniors Kalliope Spiritos and Brandon Cruz, and seniors Brittaney Mingo, Breyshon Lott, and Jailon Perry.

OMEA District 5 also sponsors an annual Honors Band which also consists of students from Mahoning, Trumbull, and Ashtabula counties.  The Honors Band is an auditioned group, and students perform in a mass band at Stambaugh Auditorium.  Earning 8th chair in the section this year, congratulations to junior trumpet player Adrianna Popovich.

Each year, OMEA sponsors a statewide Solo and Ensemble Contest which is split in two categories.  The Jr High portion is open for students in grades 7 to 9 who perform a piece of their own choosing.  The high school category is open for grades 9 to 12 and students must choose music from three lists which are ranked by difficulty.  This year Mooney had students competing in both categories.
