Both Cardinal Mooney soccer teams are riding into their annual double header against rival Ursuline with incredible momentum.
The women’s team is on a four-game winning streak, with a high goal differential of 23-3. Two of their wins are against notable teams, Hiland and Niles McKinley. The men’s team recently won its conference with a draw against a very talented Western Reserve Academy team.
Both teams have been put to the test this season, and as playoffs arise, both feel very confident coming into this rival doubleheader.
“We are on our biggest win streak this year, which is making us feel more confident than ever. We also lost to Ursuline the past two years, so we are ready to win.” said Sophia Diorio.
The men’s team grinded through a tough WRA opponent by virtue of a tie to win the Tri-Valley Athletic Conference. In the first 15 minutes, Mooney went down 1-0, but never backed away. Many efforts helped the men stay in the game including a crucial penalty save by goalkeeper Aidan Markey. In the second half the cardinals rallied a corner kick goal, headed by senior Marek Torma. The men showed lots of heart and resilience during the game, but are not satisfied with anything yet.
“Our goal is to win four championships, and we just won one. We are coming into this Ursuline game hungry, confident, and excited for another win before the playoffs start.” said Aidan Hyrb.
The double-header is set for Oct. 10 at Farmer’s Field. The women’s game starts at 6, followed by the men at 8.
