YOUNGSTOWN — Being a great student means more than earning good grades and completing homework—it’s about having heart. Samantha “Sam” Rotunno, a senior at Cardinal Mooney High School, embodies this, showing passion and commitment to her school.
Rotunno has been active in student council since her freshman year, constantly looking for ways to better support the school. Her dedication is evident in her daily efforts to contribute to student life.
“I’ve been on the council for four years, and the experience has taught me to build relationships with my classmates and administrators to help make our school more cohesive,” Rotunno said. “It has also allowed me to meet new people and step into a leadership role where I can be the person others come to for help.”
Whenever an event is planned at Mooney, Rotunno is often involved. Her leadership extends beyond student council. Recently, she was crowned homecoming queen, an acknowledgment of her dedication and popularity among classmates.
An accomplished student-athlete, Rotunno participates in volleyball, basketball, softball, and track. Despite her busy schedule of practices, games, and workouts, she maintains a 4.4 grade-point average, always prioritizing her academics.
“Track is my favorite sport because it is the most competitive and really pushes how strong you are mentally and physically,” she said.
Rotunno’s leadership skills have been honed through her years of playing sports, beginning in middle school at Holy Family. “I played volleyball, basketball, and ran track at Holy Family. I also did travel softball, where I learned many lessons and built friendships,” she said.
While she is unsure about her plans after high school, Rotunno knows she wants to major in pre-med. “I’m still trying to find a college, but I want to pursue a pre-med major and hopefully go into pediatrics,” she said. “I’d love to do mission work overseas in underserved countries.”
Rotunno’s time at Mooney has left a lasting impression. “My time here has been special because of the traditions and memories with the people I’ve met,” she said. “It feels like a family, and I’ll miss the relationships I’ve built.”
As she prepares for the next chapter, Samantha Rotunno leaves a legacy of dedication, leadership, and heart at Cardinal Mooney High School.
