YOUNGSTOWN — Chris Vass, a freshman at Cardinal Mooney High School and a rising star in the local boxing scene, delivered a dominant performance on Saturday night at the “Thanksgiving Feast” amateur boxing show, held at Penguin City Brewing.
Vass, representing SouthSide Boxing Club, secured a unanimous decision victory over Maddox Smith of Ellwood City in the main event of the 11-bout card. The 15-year-old was in control from the opening bell, showcasing sharp technique and composure in front of a supportive crowd. For his efforts, Vass was named the Most Outstanding Boxer of the evening, a testament to his rapid ascent in the sport.
“Boxing has taught me discipline and focus, which also helps me on the football field,” said Vass, who recently completed his first season as a quarterback and linebacker on Cardinal Mooney’s football team.
Vass’s journey into boxing began just over a year ago when a chance visit to a local event sparked his interest.
“I went to a show and thought it would be fun,” he said, reflecting on his start in the sport. That casual inspiration has since grown into a rigorous six-day-a-week training regimen that has prepared him for bouts like Saturday’s—and for challenges ahead.
Vass kept his mindset simple before his bout with Maddox.
“I just want to be confident and hope my training pays off,” he said.
For Vass, the pre-fight routine includes blasting rap and heavy metal to get in the zone and drawing inspiration from professional fighter Gervonta Davis. “He’s my favorite,” Vass said of the lightweight champion.
Though his entry into the sport was unplanned, Vass’s dedication and passion have turned boxing into a defining part of his life. With his performance on Saturday, the young fighter reaffirmed his status as one of the area’s brightest talents, proving that hard work and enthusiasm can yield extraordinary results.
