YOUNGSTOWN — Cross country may not have the glamor of other sports, but for those who compete, it offers unique rewards. For Cardinal Mooney’s middle school cross country team, the 2024 season has been filled with personal and team achievements.

Though small, with just eight runners—seven boys and one girl from area parochial schools—the team faced off against larger, more established squads throughout the area, even competing against some of Ohio’s top teams. Despite these challenges, the Mooney runners consistently rose to the occasion, demonstrating the discipline and dedication often associated with distance running.

Eighth-grader Elizabeth Henry, the team’s only female runner, had an impressive season, securing seven top-25 finishes, three of which were in the top 10. The boys’ team also showed strength, with two second-place finishes at Suburban League meets and first-place victories at both the Newton Falls Hill-Man’s XC Adventure Invitational and the Clipper Invitational in Columbiana.

Individually, Mooney’s runners reached new heights. The boys’ team included Alexander Binkney, Keith Johnson, Brendan Markey, Micah McNeil, Kellen Reed, Giorgio Restaino, and Justin Swaby. Together, the team earned 41 top-25 finishes, 16 top-10 placements, and eight finishes in the top five. Swaby also claimed first place at the Hill-Man’s XC Adventure Invitational.

Each runner logged countless miles over the summer, often balancing practice with other sports, and overcoming early-season injuries. Their efforts were rewarded, as all eight runners set new personal records, with some dropping their average pace by 20 seconds to over a minute during the season.

For these dedicated athletes, the 2024 season offered a rewarding glimpse into the power of persistence, teamwork, and self-improvement—qualities that have made this team a point of pride for Cardinal Mooney.
