YOUNGSTOWN — Creativity took center stage as Cardinal Mooney High School students earned top honors in the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, with Gold and Silver Key winners celebrated during a Jan. 25 ceremony at Youngstown State University.

Leading the way was Abigail Markey (11), who captured a coveted Gold Key in Photography, along with Honorable Mentions in Photography and Painting. Angel Pratts-Perez (12) earned a Silver Key in Photography and two Honorable Mentions, while Angela Bettura (9) and Alexis Flood (9) each received Silver Keys in Drawing & Illustration.

“This is one of the oldest and most respected competitions for young artists,” said Mooney photography teacher Mrs. Kandray. “It gives students a voice—both visually and literarily.”

With a history of producing national winners, Mooney students continue to shine in a competition that has recognized icons like Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, and Stephen King. Their award-winning works will be displayed at YSU’s Solomon Gallery, showcasing their talent to the community.

For Markey, who hopes her Gold Key piece advances to the national stage, the experience has been both exciting and rewarding. “I feel good. I like the photo, and it was fun to take,” she said.

Flood echoed that excitement, reflecting on the effort behind her Silver Key-winning piece. “I took a lot of time on my work, and I tried my best to capture my skills,” she said. “The challenge made it fun.”

With students from grades 7-12 eligible to compete, the Scholastic Awards continue to be a powerful platform for young artists and writers to showcase their creativity—and Cardinal Mooney students are proving they belong among the best.
